IBM used photos from social media for facial recognition research, without the permission of the people in the photos

IBM has been using around one million images from Flickr to train its facial recognition algorithms. Users were unaware that their photos had been collected for the project, and had no way of knowing that photos taken from their personal accounts were included in the data set.

Most of the Android antivirus apps block less than 30 percent of threats

Researchers from AV-Comparatives tested 250 antivirus apps in Google Play against 2,000 malware samples. They found that only 80 of the apps could stop even a minimal amount of malware. “Less than one in 10 of the apps tested defended against all 2,000 malicious apps, while over two-thirds failed to reach a block rate of even 30 percent,” the lab said.

All Boeing 737 Max flights are suspended in Europe

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has suspended flight operations of all Boeing 737-8 MAX and 737-9 MAX in Europe. The decision comes after the Sunday crash of the Ethiopian Airlines flight ET302. EASA said the measure is “necessary to ensure the safety of passengers”.

Google’s new voice recognition system works instantly and offline on Pixel

Google updated its Gboard keyboard on Pixel phones with AI-powered offline dictation. Users will be able to dictate emails and texts faster and more reliably, says Google, without worrying about whether they’re connected to the internet. For the time being, the new update is only available on Pixel phones in American English.
