Contractors working for Facebook had been listening to audio recorded from Portal smart display
Facebook said last month it stopped using humans to review and transcribe users’ voice messages, but will resume this practice for some audio collected from its Portal video-calling device. Within the EU it is expressly against the law to collect users’ data without explicit permission. It’s also against the rules to record data of underage users without a similar degree of consent from parents or guardians.

Windows Defender malware scans are broken after a recent update
Microsoft has released a new update for Windows Defender that has broken both the Quick and Full antivirus scans. Running a Quick or Full scan will fail after a few seconds and will only scan approximately 40 files, resulting in incomplete and superficial results.

Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro 5G
The phone will have a a 6.39-inch display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus processor and up to 12GB of RAM. It will be launched on September 24.

Google abandoned its smartwatch plans years ago
Google had plans to build its own smartwatch, but it canceled them in 2016. Apparently, the Watch didn’t fit with the Pixel family of products, with one former Google employee who worked on the project saying that they “didn’t want a peripheral product to bring down the name of the Google hardware brand”.

Semmle is a code analysis tool that helps developers and security researchers discover potential vulnerabilities in their code. Current Semmle users include Uber, NASA, Microsoft and Google, and the company’s core analysis platform is available for free for open-source projects.
